Sept. 4, 1933, No. 24512. [Class 68 (i)] A cutter or pick for use in coal &c. cutting machines has three symmetrically-arranged cutting points adapted to be placed in turn into cutting position. In Fig. 4, the cutter 44 is held between clamps 47, 48, by a bolt 49 engaging a boss 42 on the cutter box link, the clamp 48 having a shoulder engaging a seat 52 on the boss and the seats 52 of the various bosses being formed to different angles to determine the set of the cutter; the chain comprises two sets of cutter box links, each set being formed of identical castings with the bosses 42 of one set projecting to one side and the bosses of the other set projecting to the other side, the seats 52 being formed as by milling. Each boss may have more than one seat 52. The cutter has three points 45, Fig. 8, and a flat front face, the points being of triangular section with reinforcing ribs 46 ; the engaging faces of the clamps 47, 48, are of corresponding form and the clamp 48 has a lower recess 54 and lateral lugs 55 co-operating with a lower lug and lateral chamfered surfaces on the clamp 47. In Fig. 10, the cutter is similarly held between clamps 57, 58, reversibly held by a screw 59 engaging either of two bosses 60 ; the cutter box links all may be formed of identical castings placed in reverse positions so that the bosses 60 project to opposite sides. In Fig. 12, the cutter box has a transverse groove with sloping edges 80 against either of which two cutters are held by a clamp 81 secured by wedge block 82 and bolt 83. In Figs. 16 and 18, the cutter 98 is formed as a hollow triangular pyramid, the clamp 99 having a rim 102 embracing the cutter while the clamp 100 has a nose entering the cutter, the parts being fixed by a bolt 106 while the set of the cutter is determined by a pin passing through apertures in the clamps and into one of a series of holes 110 in the cutter box ; a screw 107 in the clamp 99 enters an annular groove 108 in the bolt. The cutter may have an aperture in its apex engaged by a projection on the clamp 100 or it may be solid as in Fig. 25, and may have a pin 111 and recess 112 for engagement with the clamps ; the points of the cutter may be rounded. In Fig. 28, the clamps 99, 100 have shanks pivotally interlocking at 118 and held in a standard cutter box 115<a> by a screw 119 ; the clamp 100 has a projection 120 tending to prevent removal and a spring 121 lifts the clamps on release of the screw. In Fig. 30, the shanks of the clamps are each semicircular to permit ready reversal of the cutter, and are forced downwardly into the cutter box by the conical end of a screw 119 entering a conical recess 122.
