[Class 59] In a jet pulverizer in which material is projected onto a fixed impact member by gaseous fluid issuing from a nozzle in which substantially the entire transformation of potential energy into kinetic energy takes place, the narrowest cross section of the nozzle is varied by a body or pin, preferably conical, which is adjustable in the axial direction of the nozzle. In Fig. 3 air enters at orifice 7 and after passing through a nozzle 2 picks up coal, fed in through orifice 11, and projects it through mixing pipe 8 onto an impact block 10, the fines being carried out through orifice 13. The flow of air or gas through the nozzle 2 is controlled by a member 3 movable by hand wheel 6. The member may be attached to a piston 23, Fig. 4, in a cylinder 24, the movement of the plug being controlled by the differential pressure produced by an adjustable spring 25 and a steam pressure admitted at 26, the steam being tapped off, for example, from the nozzle chamber of a steam turbine which drives the air compressor. In Fig. 5 the nozzle 30 is controlled by a member 31 attached to a solenoid 34, the current through which varies with the current to the motor driving the pulverizer compressor. The mixing tube 35 is connected by pivoted lever 37, link 38 and pivoted lever 39 with the member 31 to control the flow of coal to the nozzle. The member 31 may be actuated by a thermostat located in the furnace, or by a relay or servomotor.
