Abstract
426,368. Electromagnetic clutches with gearing. CLARKE, G. T. SMITH-, c/o Alvis Car & Engineering Co., Holyhead Road, Coventry. Jan. 20, 1934, No. 2009. [Classes 35 and 38 (iv)] Driving and driven shafts all connected by an epicyclic gear combined with an electromagnetic machine of the kind having a rotatable permanent field and a rotatable shortcircuited armature, the torque transmitted between the members depending largely upon difference in speed. In the application to the flywheel of a motor vehicle engine, the crank shaft 17 carries a disc 16 to which is bolted a laminated iron ring 11 having recesses engaged by the outer ends of bar magnets 13 which co-operate with a squirrel cage or other form of short circuited rotor 12. The sun wheel 19 of the epicyclic gear is connected to the centre of a disc 18 bolted to the crank shaft disc 16. The annulus 20 is connected to the rotor 12 and is therefore dragged round by the crank shaft 17 through electro-magnetic action. The planet pinions 21 are carried by the driven shaft 22 which is thus rotated in part through the clutch. A mechanical clutch, for instance a small cone clutch may be interposed between the driving shaft 17 and the sun wheel 19 as described in Specification 385,112, [Group XXIV]. When associated with change-speed gearing, the driven shaft 22 may be held when required by a brake. Specification 337,464, [Class 35], also is referred to.
