[Classes 103 (ii), 103 (v), and 108 (iii)] [See also Group XXXIII] A guard for minimizing damage in the event of collision of road or rail vehicles, or motor or pedal cycles, or in the event of an aeroplane making a forced landing or nose-diving to the ground comprises a transverse member or fender h pivotally connected to one or more tubular members b each of which normally is partly projected from a cylinder a fixed to the vehicle, by springs e, f which bear at their opposite ends respectively on the cylinder end a<2> and on an abutment ring f<1> adjustable on the tube b, and at their adjacent ends on a ring e<1> slidable on the tube b, the length of the tube b projecting from the cylinder being limited by a ring d mounted on a bolt c adjustable on a nut b<1> on the end of the tube, the ring d being adapted to engage the end of the cylinder. Slight blows on the fender are absorbed by the springs f and heavy blows by both springs acting successively. The abutment ring f may be held in one of several positions by clipping a spring-ring f<2> into one of a series of annular grooves b<2> formed on the tube b. The fender h may have rubber pads. When applied to an aeroplane, the resilient devices may be mounted on either side of the front of the body or below it; or the fender may form a nose-cap and be attached to the nose of the aeroplane by one or more resilient devices.
