423,695. Conductors. NORDDEUTSCHE SEEKABELWERKE AKT.-GES., Nordenham, Oldenburg, Germany. Jan. 24, 1934, No. 2511. Convention date, Jan. 24, 1933. [Class 36] To improve the filling factor in a conductor of the re-entrant or litzendraht type, cords of thermoplastic or soluble material, such as polystyrol, alone or in admixture with guttapercha, paragutta, or balata, are stranded together with the wires of the conductor, the cords being subsequently softened by heat or a solvent and the stranded conductor then subjected to drawing or rolling. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, a conductor 6, before rolling, comprises conductor groups 5 cabled together and each consisting of cabled elements 4 which are formed by stranding together wires 2, 3 and a thermoplastic cord 1. In another construction three conductor groups each comprising six wires laid about a thermoplastic cord, are stranded together about a central wire. Fig. 3 shows another construction in which six conductor groups, consisting of wires 23 stranded about thermoplastic cords 22, are cabled around a central core comprising a wire 21 and thermoplastic cords 20. Such a conductor after rolling, takes the form shown in Fig. 4, the thermoplastic material then being evenly distributed in the spaces between the wires and, when the conductor is used in a submarine cable, constituting a pressure equalizing medium.
