[Class 16] [See also Group VIII] In a bookbinding-machine of the kind wherein the groups of signatures or sheets are advanced edgewise by a clamping conveyer from which the back edges protrude, means is provided for evenly trimming the back edges of the groups B preparatory to applying adhesive thereto comprising a single sharp-edged cutting-disc 25 mounted at one side of the group path of travel and adapted to be rotated to trim the groups during travel, and co-operating therewith at the opposite side of the group path is a non- cutting abutment 45 extending both above and below the cutting plane and presenting a face adapted to give support, against the cutting thrust, to the group edge including the part thereof being severed, whereby the cutting- disc effects a slicing, non-shearing cut against the face of the abutment. The cutting-disc 25 is removably mounted over a table 26 on a shaft 27 secured in a carriage 28 which may be adjusted horizontally and vertically. The disc is preferably power-driven and in the same direction as, but faster than, the travel of the groups B The co-operating abutment 45 may be stationary or movable, but preferably comprises a succession of individual metal, fibre, wood or other blocks which are not hard enough to damage the disc 25, should they contact therewith, mounted on an endless chain 49 comprised of upper and lower links, and driven in unison with and from the same source as the groups B. Each block is recessed to receive the lower part of rear clamp plate gripping the group B. Pressure is applied to the front lower edge of each group B, being trimmed by means of a rotary confining disc 70 mounted above and in contact with the cutting-disc 25. The disc 70 is mounted on a vertical shaft 72 carried in an arm 74 which is spring-pressed towards the group B and slidable within predetermined limits in a dovetailed slideway 76. The disc 70 is also recessed to receive the lower edge of the front plate gripping the group B. Preferably, the cutting-disc 25 is set so that it does not contact with the abutment 45, and the thin part of the group B untrimmed is subsequently sheared off by means of front and rear shearing-discs driven in opposite directions from the same source as the main cutting-disc 25 and the clamp train for the groups of signatures or sheets B. The cutting-disc 25 may be ground or sharpened during operation.
