Abstract
410,412. Cutting book indexes. MARKIEWICZ, F., 12, Unter den Linden, Berlin. Nov. 3, 1933, No. 30622. [Classes 31 (i) and 31 (ii).] Thumb indexes on books are cut by a hollow boring tool 9, Fig. 1, or a milling cutter 23, Figs. 3 and 4, in combination with means for clamping the book at the edges of the cuts. The work 5 is held by a presser foot 11 yieldingly mounted on the tool carrier and moving with the tool to or from the work. In Fig. 1, the foot 11 is mounted on a rod 12 which is operated by the hand lever 10, and bears on a spring 14. A shoot 15 conducts the waste to a box 16. A half groove 8 is formed in the rail 7 and foot 11 to guide the tool 9. The work is fed step-bystep by a pedal-operated bar 17 and a band secured under the work. In the form shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the cutter 23 is mounted on a grooved or splined shaft 24 driven from a motor 25 and carried by arms 34 which can be raised or lowered by racks and pinions and a hand wheel 33. The cutter is adjusted on the shaft 24 by a forked arm 29, nut 30, and a screwed shaft 28 operated by a ratchet and pedal or otherwise. The yielding foot 11 and rail 21 are grooved at intervals for the cutter.
