[Class 40 (iii)] [See also Group VIII] In a keyboard mechanism for impulsetransmission or tape - perforation, different code combinations can be simultaneously set up by the actuation of a single key-lever, and means is provided for rendering one of the combinations set up effective to control the impulse - transmission or tape - perforation. The normal permutation bars are replaced by five pairs of bars of which only one pair 1, 2 is shown ; and link members 3, one of which is associated with each pair of bars, transfer the settings of one bar of each pair to associated transmitting or perforating control members 6, 7. A shift-key 9 is associated with keylevers corresponding to two characters, and when operated controls the link members 3 by which one of the two code combinations set up by the depression of the key is selected. In the position shown a projection 24 of a link member 3 engages a notch 23 in the bar 1 which in its movement to the right or left controls the link 6, 7. The depression of the shift-key 9 rotates the cradle 4 and a rod 14 in an anti-clockwise direction, rocking the link 3 so that a projection 22 engages a notch 231 in the bar 2 which together with the corresponding bars of the other pairs now control the setting of the members 6, 7. The bars 1, 2 are similarly notched under keys carrying a single character and the arrangement may be embodied in the keyboard transmitting mechanism described in Specification 388,785, in which the appropriate shift or reshift signal is automatically inserted on the depression of any key-lever.
