Abstract
<PICT:0420793/III/1> Anhydrous or slightly hydrated calcium nitrate is obtained by contacting a solution of the salt with a hot gas, such as gas from a coke works having a temperature say of 900 DEG C. In carrying out the process with the solution and gas passing in countercurrent, a 50 per cent solution may first be concentrated in a scrubber filled with porcelain rings, the 65 per cent solution so obtained be concentrated to 80 per cent in a film evaporator, and the solid salt be recovered in a second film evaporator comprising a rotating drum 6 furnished with discs 7 which dip into the solution in the lower part of the evaporating tank, and scrapers 8 for removing solidified salt and passing it to a worm conveyer. Gases passing from the first film evaporator to the second, and from the second to the scrubber, may be admixed with fresh gases, and during concentration in the scrubber, the solution may be continuously circulated therethrough.
