[Class 83 (iv)] A pipe blank 1 is reduced on a pushing mandrel 2 by forcing it through a series of undriven reducing rolls 5a, 5<b>, 5<c>, 5d, the feed being assisted by large driven rollers 7<a>, 7b. The diameter of the reducing rolls is less than twice the diameter of the pass, and the diameter of the feed rollers should be from 1¢ to 4 times the diameter of the pass. The reducing pass may consist of three or more rollers, and the feedings pass may consist of two rollers only. The smaller rollers 7<b> may be undriven and thus become partially reducing rolls. The arc of contact of the reducing rolls may be small or flattened to reduce friction.
