Abstract

417,156. Combined buffing and draw gear for railway vehicles. SPENCER MOULTON & CO., Ltd., G., and GLASCODINE, R. T., 2, Central Buildings, Westminster. Oct. 16, 1933, No. 28589. [Class 103 (v).] Buffing and draw gear for railway vehicles comprises triple springs encircling the draw bar and arranged tandemwise wherein compression of the outer springs in parallel is obtained by followers telescoping within each other and the compression of the centre spring in parallel therewith is obtained by flanged casings housing the outer springs. Three series of springs 2, 3, 4 of the kind described in Specifications 390,555 and 390,633 are mounted tandemwise about a central drum and buffing rod 1. The end springs 2, 4 are encased in rectangular tubular housings 20, 21 having flanges 22, 23 abutting the central spring 3. About the rod 1 and within the springs are mounted followers 24, 27 having segmental projecting fingers as 32, 33, Fig. 3, adapted to telescope over one another and pass through recesses 36 in the opposite follower 24 or 27. Follower plates 26, 29, 40, 41 are arranged as shown. In operation a draught pull on the rod 1 compresses spring 4 by the follower plate 41 which also moves forward the housing 21 and follower 24 through its fingers in contact with the plate 41 so that all three springs are compressed in parallel. Similarly, a buffing action compresses all the springs in parallel. If desired the dimensions of the various parts may be varied to give a compression in series followed by a compression in parallel.
