Abstract

A spring comprises a plurality of elongated elements formed separately or formed by bending a continuous strip of material, the elements being in face-to-face contact. In the former case the elements are joined in pairs at both ends to form a zig-zag " strip " and in both cases the spring is held within a frame comprising walls 3, 4 such that, in use, the elements of the springs are loaded substantially only in tension and compression. The ends of the strip are joined to end plates 7, 8 one of which may be biased by a leaf spring towards the other (Fig. 5, not shown). The elements may also comprise nested arcuate plates, two sets of which are diametrically opposed between concentric cylinders (Fig. 7, not shown). Lubrication may be provided in the material of or between the elements.
