Abstract
416,539. Moulding plastic substances by extrusion. PORTEUS, G., Leeds Bridge Works, Hunslet, Leeds. Nov. 11, 1933, No. 31461. [Class 87 (ii).] In machines for moulding plastic material of the kind comprising a pair of interengaging drums either or both of which have one or more annular compression chambers formed on their periphery with which co-operates the plain peripheral portion of the other drum, the base of each annular compression chamber is provided with a plurality of annular series of apertures which have flared entrances arranged side by side and occupying practically the whole base area of said chamber so that the co-operating plain peripheral portion of the other drum will compress substantially all the material into the flared entrances and force it through the plurality of apertures simultaneously. The two drums 1 each have a narrow annular flange 3 and a broad flange 2 which co-operates with the annular compression chamber formed in the other drum. Each compression chamber has two annular series of apertures 4 which are of rectangular cross-section and have flared entrances 5. The drums 1 are detachably secured by bolts 6 to driving shafts 8 so as to be readily interchangeable. In a modification, one drum has a plain periphery which cooperates with a single compression chamber on the other drum. In a further form, one drum may be mounted inside the other and apertures may be provided in one or both drums. The material emerging from the apertures is removed by a stationary knife or scraper to form cubes.
