Abstract

Compounds of the formula RNHXXNHR<1>, where R represents an alkyl or aralkyl group, R<1> represents hydrogen, an alkyl or an aralkyl group, and X represents a benzene nucleus, which may be substituted, are prepared by heating benzidine, or a substituted benzidine such as o-tolidine, or o-dianisidine, with an alkyl or aralkyl halide such as benzyl chloride or butyl chloride, in the presence or absence of a solvent. Compounds stated to be obtainable are: benzylbenzidine, sym. dibenzylbenzidine, benzyltolidine, benzyldianisidine, allylbenzidine, butylbenzidine, xylylbenzidine, sym. dixylylbenzidine, benzylpropylbenzidine and benzylxylylbenzidine. The compounds are used as anti-agers for rubber.ALSO:The ageing of rubber is retarded by the addition to the mix of compounds of the general formula <FORM:0415073/V/1> where R represents an alkyl or aralkyl group and R1 represents hydrogen an alkyl or an aralkyl group. The amino groups are preferably in the para position. The diphenyl nuclei may be substituted by one or more alkyl or alkoxyl groups. The materials may also be used to retard the ageing of vulcanized rubber, by treating the vulcanized rubber with a solution of the compounds. The compounds may be prepared by heating either with or without a solvent, benzidine or a substituted benzidine such as o-tolidine or o-dianisidine, and an alkaryl or alkyl halide such as benzyl chloride or butyl chloride. Compounds mentioned are:-benzylbenzidine, symmetrical dibenzylbenzidine, benzyltolidine, benzyldianisidine, allylbenzidine, butylbenzidine, metolylbenzidine, symmetrical dimetolylbenzidine, benzylpropylbenzidine, and benzylmetolylbenzidine.
