Abstract
414,936. Handcuffs &c. ; hinges. KOKAY, (nÚe TUBITS), J., Dumbovar, Hungary. Nov. 17, 1933, No. 32138. [Classes 44 and 65 (ii).] In a fetter or handcuff, the two cuffs are pivoted together by a pin f carrying a spring j which urges them into the normal position of use in one plane, suitable abutments preventing movement beyond this position. Each cuff is formed by two parts pivoted together and consisting of an arcuate member c having circular recesses d which enters between two arcuate members b, b<1> and is retained by a catch. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the catch consists of the down-turned end m<1> of an L-shaped spring m secured to the part bl and enclosed within flanges x formed on the end of the parts b, b<1>. The cuff is unfastened by a flat key o, Fig. 12, which passes through a slot h in the flanges x and a U-shaped guide n so that its bevelled end engages with the underside of the spring m to disengage the end m<1>. The key is slotted to pass transverse pins s in the guide n. In a slightly modified form, Fig. 12, the catch consists of a tongue m<1> bent out of a disc 1 carried by a spring m fixed to the arcuate member b<1> ; the disc 1 and the extension 3 thereof by which it is secured to the spring m is housed in a recess in the other arcuate member b to relieve the spring from strain. When not in use, the cuffs are folded so as to lie one against the other and are retained in this position by a hook-like member pivoted on one cuff and embracing the other. In another form, Figs. 6, 8 and 10, the circular recesses d are formed in the edge instead of the face of the part c and are engaged by a spring-pressed sliding latch 14 which is withdrawn by a key 18 co-operating with a depending arm 17, a pin 20 limiting the turning of the key. The cuffs are provided with extensions 4, 5 connected together by the pin f, the extension 5 being rigid with one cuff and the extension 4 being rotatably connected to the other cuff by a pin 6. The cuffs are held one against the other when not in use by the edge 10 of a spring 8 on the extension 5 engaging with a lug 12 on the extension 4. The spring is disengaged to release the cuffs by a transverse pin 11 engaging with the spring when the pin f is turned by a handle f<1>.
