Abstract
850,830. Catch fastenings. HALLAM, SLEIGH & CHESTON Ltd. Nov. 6, 1958 [Nov. 6, 1957], No. 34554/57. Class 44. In a door fastening of the kind comprising two pivoted catch arms 3, 4 movable outwards about their pivots 6 in opposite directions by spring means 8, the outer ends of the arms terminating in hook catch parts 5 which during the action of closing the door are moved inwards towards one another by co-operating striker means and snap behind the latter to hold the door closed, key operated means are provided for positively holding the pivoted catch arms in their outwardly pressed door fastening positions the said key operated means comprising a rotary stop part 16 disposed between the arms and adapted to be turned by the key to bring it into a position to prevent the arms from moving back towards one another from their door fastening positions sufficiently to allow of the opening of the door. The rotary stop part 16 is fixed by screws 15 to the rotary barrel of a lock 14 so as to turn with the barrel. The stop part has a pair of radial arms 19 the ends 19a of which are bent back at right angles so that when the stop part is in one position the ends 19a engage notches 13 in the inner edges of the arms 3, 4 so that the arms cannot move towards their unfastening positions. Mounted on an axis concentric with that of the stop part 16 is a plate 20 which is formed at opposite side edges with shouldered parts 22 which can be engaged by the ends 19a of the arms 19 of the stop part when this is turned in the opposite direction to that which locks the arms 3, 4 in the fastened position; this engagement of the ends 19a with the plate 20 turns the plate and pins 21 on the plate co-operate with inclined cam surfaces 12 on the arms 3, 4 to move the latter inwardly about their pivots 6 into their door releasing positions. The stop part 16 can also be turned by the key into a neutral intermediate position in which the arms 3, 4 are free to move inwards against the action of the spring 8 during the closing of the door and also to return to their fastening positions. To enable the door to be unfastened without the use of the key, provided the catch arms 3, 4 have first been released by the key so that they are free to move inwards against the action of spring 8, a slidable wedge 24 can be provided which engages extensions 25 of the arms and which when it is slid laterally by means of handles connected to a spindle 33 causes the extensions 25 of the arms to move apart and hence the parts 5 to move inwardly to release the fastening. In a modification a rotary cam can be provided for moving the extensions apart instead of a sliding wedge. The mechanism can be modified so that the key serves only to lock the arms in their fastening positions, the release being effected by the handles moving the wedge or cam.
