Abstract
414,792. Cleaning iron &c. surfaces. METZ, F., 26, Blanckestrasse, Merseburg, Germany. Feb. 22, 1933, No. 5464. [Class 99 (ii).] Rust and scale is removed from iron &c. surfaces by tools, viz., a scraper 20 and a wire brush 21, mounted on one end of a rod 19, the other end of which is connected to a piston 16 adapted to reciprocate within a cylinder 15 under the action of compressed air, one or both of the said tools being effective according to the angle of inclination of the rod 19 with respect to the surface being operated upon. The air supply is controlled by a rotary valve 22, the rotatable part 41 of which constitutes a handle for the device, and air is admitted alternately to opposite sides of the piston by slide valves 17, 18 located at the ends of the cylinder 15. With the parts disposed as shown in Fig. 6, the valve 22 being open, air will pass through ports in a disc 39 and channels 23, 24 to the middle of the valve 17 and from there to the valve 18 through a channel 25. The valve 18, and with it the piston 16, will commence to move to the right, and when the valve is clear of the part 46 the air will impinge on the piston and compel it to complete the stroke, the air from the previous stroke being exhausted through ports 31<a> and channels 29, 26, 30 to the exhaust channels 31 until the piston covers the inlets to the said channels 29. The remaining air is then compressed and forces the valve 17 to the right, whereupon the channel 24 is closed by this valve and the air through the channel 23 is directed to the right-hand side of the piston. The piston will now move to the left, the air from the previous stroke exhausting through the valve 18, channel 25 to the middle of the valve 17, and channels 26, 31. The exhaust air is conveyed to the brush 21 where it disperses the dust &c. Towards the end of this stroke the piston will move the valve 18 to the left ; as a consequence the exhaust ports 31<a> will open, thus reducing the pressure in the cylinder and allowing the air on the right of the valve 17 to move the latter to the left. A channel 28 is provided in the cylinder for supplying starting air to move the valve 17 to the right should it be in the position shown when the piston is at rest at the right-hand end of the cylinder.
