[Class 114.] In hydraulic electric steering-gear for ships comprising two groups of two rams P<1>, P<2> each separately supplied by a pump J<1>, J<2> and including two byepasses G<1>, G<2> which come into operation when a corresponding pump is damaged or otherwise out of action, there is provided a double distributing valve E controlled from the main control so as to ensure a correct arrangement of circuits when one pump only is operating. Pumps J<1>, J<2> are controlled for eccentricity by rods t<1>, t<2> which are coupled to a control member C and also by links to the rams which forms a followup device. In normal working, the pump J<1> operates the group of rams P<1> and the pump J<2>, the rams P<2>. When the motors driving the pumps are working and the rods t<1>, t<2> are in their neutral position, the pumps do not deliver to the rams and springs R <1> R<2> keep the byepasses closed. When the control C is moved, a rod B brings the slide valves T<1>, T<2> into position for both pumps and rams to be operative and pressure is exerted on the byepasses G<1>, G<2> which effects their closing. If one pump no longer delivers then the circuit to the corresponding group of rams is opened by the corresponding byepass. Specification 397,668 is referred to.
