Abstract

413,027. B o l tin g. DARDELET, H. L., 5, Rue Menou, Nantes, Loire-InfÚrieure, France. Jan. 19, 1933, No. 1824. [Class 89 (i).] Relates to a method of making screwed joints such as by securing parts together by studs or bolts in which a screw-threaded member is screwed into or on to an unthreaded member of softer material in which threads are cut as the joint is made. The engaging surface of one member is cylindrical and that of the other is partly cylindrical and partly conical, and the dimensions are such that the thread of the harder member is not completely filled by the material displaced in cutting the thread on the softer member. For example, in the case of a screw c<2>, Fig. 7, and an unthreaded nut a of softer metal the bore d is greater than the mean of the diameters e, f, of the top and bottom of the threads of the screw. The conical portion a<2> of the bore facilitates the commencement of the operation. The head of a bolt may be secured to a shank by the above method. In bolting together two plates A, B, Fig. 11, screw threads are formed in the holes in the plate as well as in the nut o. The nut may engage a portion of the bolt smaller in diameter than the holes in the plate. The shank of the bolt adjacent the head is reduced in diameter over a length k greater than the thickness of plate B. The end of a stud bolt has a groove v<2>, Fig. 15, extending along a part of the tapered threaded portion to facilitate the cutting of the thread.
