Abstract

412,844. Arc lamps. PARFITT, A. W., Stafford House, Norfolk Street, Strand, London.-(Tappan, C. ; 420, West End Avenue, New York, U.S.A.) Nov. 23, 1933, No. 32744. [Class 39 (i).] Relates to a control arrangement for an A.C. arc in which the electrodes 10, 11 are adjusted by means of a motor M under the control of a relay. The arc is fed from the secondary winding 7 of a transformer T having a high leakage reactance, an additional secondary winding 8 supplying the motor M and a relay R through a rectifier C. When the arc current falls off, due to the leakage reactance, the voltage across the winding 8 increases and the current through the relay R rises to a value sufficient to operate the relay and cause adjustment of the electrodes by the motor M. In a modification, a clockwork motor is used, in which case the relay R operates a brake. In another modification, the rectifier C is supplied from a current transformer connected in the supply to the arc. In this case reduction of current in the rectifier circuit causes actuation of the relay to complete the motor circuit. The primary of the current transformer may be shunted by a resistance.
