[Class 38 (iii).] A dead-man's handle comprises an operating handle which must be moved transversely with respect to its normal movement against a spring, in order that it may be effectively employed in its normal movement to operate the control apparatus, and means are provided whereby the reaction exerted on the handle by the spring in the operative position, although greater than zero, is much less than that exerted when the handle is being moved to said operative position. A push rod 3 passing through the handle bars 1 is spring biassed upwards to open contacts and render the controller ineffective. When the pivoted handle 2 is depressed, an adjustable pin 8 acts on a pivoted arm 7 and depresses the rod 3 to close the contacts. The end of the arm 7 travels along the edge of a latch 10, and, in its fully depressed position, engages a shoulder 10<a> of the latch 10. The handle 2 in the depressed position also causes a spring plunger 11 to act on the latch 10, and, with slight force, maintain it in engagement with the arm 7. Small upward movements of the handle 2 are then ineffective, but release of the handle frees the latch 10 which is moved clear by upward movement of the arm 7 under the influence of the spring bias acting on the rod 3.
