Abstract

<PICT:0410795/IV/1> <PICT:0410795/IV/2> Apparatus for attemperating the spinning solution in the production of artificial filaments by dry spinning methods comprises a body such as a coil 12 through which the spinning solution passes and which is adapted to be exposed to the atmosphere in the spinning cell 3, and a shield 8 which is adjustable with respect to the body so as to regulate the extent to which the body is exposed to the atmosphere of the cell. The cell which is heated by pipes 4 has a filter candle 5 with an adapter 6 carrying the nozzle 7. The solution passes through the candle 5 to the adapter 6, up a pipe 11 and through the coil 12 to the jet 7, loss of heat from the heated solution being minimised by an asbestos washer 13. The coil 12 and candle 5 are adjustably sheathed by a split jacket 8 fixed to the required position by tightening the band 9 by the screw 10. The apparatus is applicable for use with solutions of cellulose esters, ethers or ether-esters. Two or more candles in the same cell may have their shields differently adjusted so that the solution issues from the different jets at different temperatures, the resulting filaments therefore having different lustres. The coil 12 preferably has a high heat conductivity and its surface may be corrugated, while the shield is of low conductivity and may be of asbestos.
