Abstract
410,334. Augers. NIXON, A., 11, Mead Place, Croydon. June 22, 1933, No. 17825. [Class 83 (iii).] In a method of and apparatus for drilling large holes in floors &c. a screwed rod or tube a is inserted in a pilot hole drilled at the required angle in the floor and receives an auger d which, on being rotated by an electric drill &c., is screwed down the tube a to be fed through the work. Two arms b are pivoted at bl in slots a<2> at the lower end of the tube a and are acted upon by one or more springs c so as to swing outwardly below a floor &c. g<1>, Fig. 6, to form an abutment for the axial feed of the auger. The auger may have an integral body d with one or more radial cutters d<1> and side cutters d<2> as shown in Figs. 6 and 7, or may have a detachable sole-plate k, Fig. 8, interchangeable for others of different size, carrying the cutters d<1>, d<2>. The body d is attached to a sleeve e carrying a driving shank e<2> and a central rod f which, when the auger has almost penetrated the work, acts on shoulders b2 on the arms b to withdraw them into the tube a to clear the auger. A guide collar h may be mounted on a ball bearing attached to the sleeve e so as to engage the bored hole, as shown in Fig. 6, and support the auger when its lower side breaks through the work. When boring vertical holes a tripod j, Fig. 7, may be attached to a bayonet slot in the collar h and is positioned at a point on the sleeve e such that it will make contact with the upper surface of the floor when the auger is about to break through, thereby preventing the auger from falling. For boring holes in the caps or covers of worm conveyer casings the auger d is attached to the shank m<1>, Fig. 10, of a pilot drill m and abuts against a shoulder m<2> thereon. Specification 413,458 is referred to.
