Abstract

406,419. Insulators. HOLZEL, J., 71, Agricola Strasse, Munich, and BROWN, BOVERT, ET CIE, Kõferthal, Mannheim, both in Germany. Nov. 1, 1932, No. 30730. [Class 36.] To prevent breakdown under flash-over conditions of an insulator made of ceramic material, protectors of difficultly fusible ceramic material, i.e. containing a greater proportion of kaolin than the material of the insulator body, are disposed on the insulator adjacent the parts, for instance the metal fittings of the insulator, which the ends of the flash-over arc are most liable to strike. The protectors may consist of separate rings or shields or may be in the form of coverings or tips which are moulded in with the material of the insulator body. As shown in Fig. 1, an insulator a having sheds b and metal end caps c is provided with protecting rings d for preventing melting of the caps c under flash-over conditions. In modified constructions the protectors may completely enclose the caps c or the rings d may be of larger diameter than the sheds band a protecting ring may be disposed intermediate of the rings d. Fig. 3 shows protectors f, g applied to an insulator of the chain suspension type. Insulators provided with arcing horns may have protectors disposed on the arcing horns. The Specification includes examples of ceramic materials from which the insulator body and protectors may be made.
