Abstract

Thin packing material comprises sheets or strips of transparent or translucent gelatinized cellulosic material, for example regenerated cellulose, cellulose esters or ethers, coated wholly or partly with the water-insoluble, pressure-sensitive or solvent-activated adhesives described in Specification 405,263. The sheet may be previously coated with waterproofing compositions comprising cellulose esters or ethers, oxidized and gelatinized drying oils, or synthetic resins such as phenolic or urea condensation resins. The backing may be pre-coated with a priming composition which may comprise a solution in benzol or naphtha of rubber and a resin such as Burgundy pitch or rosin to which a filler such as whiting or zinc oxide, sulphur and accelerators may be added. The rubber may be partially vulcanized or treated with alkali to remove non-rubber hydrocarbons.
