405,205. Motor-vehicle axles. BUGATTI, E., Molsheim, Bas-Rhin, France. July 27, 1933, No. 21139. Convention date, Aug. 8, 1932. [Class 79 (iv).] A motor-vehicle front axle comprises two or more portions, each end portion being capable of rotation about a longitudinal axis with respect to the adjacent portion, and being provided with a reaction rod to take the stresses set up by braking and tractive torques. As shown, the axle comprises two members a, b, the ends of which are enclosed within a box c so that they are capable of relative angular movement about their axes. Each part carries a spindle e on which reaction rods d are pivotally mounted, these rods also being pivoted to the frame at f. Alternatively, the member a may be screwed into an internally threaded sleeve integral with or secured to the member b. In a further modification, the axle comprises three members, the central member being rotatably secured to the end members, which carry the reaction rods.
