Abstract

404,151. Paper and like tubes. WARBURTON, R. E. L., 42, Rutland Gate, London. Feb. 4, 1933, No. 3468. [Class 99 (ii).] A tubular abrasive element for use on an abrasive tool comprises a supporting mandrel of paper &c., covered with a spirally-wound strip of abrasive-coated material, the mandrel being formed and covered with the abrasive strip in one continuous operation. The element is formed by the use of a series of rolls 1-4 on a shaft 5 carrying fabric, for example chipboard or kraft paper, strips 6-9 fed to, and wound spirally on a former 10 so that the strips 6, 7 form the mandrel, and the strip 8 a supporting layer for the abrasive coated strip 9 ; the layers formed by the strips are arranged to break joint, and are secured together by an adhesive. Portions of the desired length are cut from the tube, and may be moulded, to give any desired contour, either before the adhesive has set, or afterwards by softening by moisture or in a steam box. In order to avoid tearing of the abrasive covering as at the edges 21, the corners of the element, at 22, may be moulded or bent inwards. The number of strips employed may be varied ; for example, one of the strips 6, 7 may be omitted, or more than two strips may be employed. A removable protective layer of thin paper also may be wound over the abrasive layer.
