Abstract

Cellulose triacetate is hydrolysed, for example, to acetone solubility, by the addition thereto of perchloric acid in the presence of acetic acid. In place of perchloric acid there may be used perchlorates or complex bodies or mixtures containing perchoric acid, e.g. perchloric acid and phosphoric acid dissolved in glacial acetic acid. Examples are given of the hydrolysis of cellulose triacetate dissolved in acetic acid by means of an aqueous solution of perchloric acid.
