[Class 12 (i).] In a shaft thrust bearing in which a supplementary carrying member or shoe A forming a combined thrust pad supporting member and journal bearing is provided on one or both sides of a single collar H on the shaft so as to take the axial or thrust load in one or both directions of thrust, the whole of the journal load as well as the thrust load is transmitted through the shoe or shoes A to the main carrying member D comprised by the lower rigid half of the thrust bearing casing. The shoes A, Fig. 1, support the usual Michell pads B which are prevented from rotating by blocks J bolted to the extremities of the shoe. The faces of the shoes remote from the pads B are machined and receive adjusting liners or spacers G penetrated by tap bolts I passing through the main carrying member D into the shoes A. The inner peripheries of the shoes which have lubricant grooves E may themselves form the journal bearing or they may house a series of pivotal journal pads C. The outer peripheries of the shoes are machined at F, the coaxial cylindrical surfaces so formed engaging corresponding machines surfaces on the main carrying member D. The cap L is provided with steady bearings. D<1> and is slotted to receive a scraper K for scraping oil from the collar H whence it reaches the grooves E.
