Abstract

[Classes 65 (i) and 65 (ii).] A hinge incorporating a fluid check device comprises a cylindrical barrel forming one of the knuckle parts of the hinge, a hollow piston slidable axially in the barrel, a hollow axial helical stem secured at one end to one of the other knuckle parts and arranged to engage one end of the piston, and an adjusting rod passing through the helical stem and adapted to control the flow of fluid through the end of the piston opposite to that engaged by the helical stem. The barrel portion c, carried on one of the hinge plates, has its ends closed by screwed plugs hand covered by knuckle parts d on the other hinge plate. The lower plug h bears either on a stub pin s screwed in the lower knuckle d, or, in a modification, on a thrust ball which replaces the pin. A hollow stem i is fixed in the upper knuckle d, being secured against rotation therein by a screw key t, and is formed with helical grooves constituting a quick-pitch screw thread engaging the upper part j of a hollow piston e which thus works as a nut on the stem i ; the piston e is prevented from rotation in the barrel c by keys f, so that relative movement of the hinge members causes sliding of the piston. A rod k, screwed and adjustable in the hollow stem i and provided with a finger-knob and lock-nut at its upper end, has a hollow lower part engaging over a tapered stem l which projects through a bore in the lower end of the piston and more or less closes the opening at the end of the rod k according to the vertical position of this rod. The rod k has an aperture m in its side, and the piston has apertures p in its walls and a ball valve q in its lower end. Fluid passes freely through the ball valve q during the upward movement of the piston, but this is closed in the downward movement and fluid can then only pass freely through the piston while the latter is above the lower edge of the aperture m, the motion being checked thereafter by passage of the fluid through the opening at the end of the rod k, restricted by the stem i ; the rod k is usually arranged to extend within the bore in the lower end of the piston, as shown, in the lowest portion of the latter, but it may be raised so that the piston passes clear of it to give an unchecked final closing movement.
