Abstract

400,712. Thermally-actuated valves. HOPKINS, E. M., Wern, Llanmorlais, near Swansea. June 10, 1932, No. 16499. [Class 135.] A device for the automatic opening and closing of ventilators, windows, or shutters, in accordance with the change of temperature, by the pressure exerted on a piston by an expansible liquid, includes means whereby the pressure on the piston is automatically relieved if the ventilator fails to open. A receptacle 1 containing an expansible liquid such as methylated spirits, and a sealing liquid 26, such as oil, is provided in its narrow part 3 with a piston 4 connected by piston-rod 7, member 10, and rod 9 with a lever 12 secured to a lever 12A attached to a shaft 14. On expansion of the liquid in the receptacle, the piston is depressed, and ventilators 15, 25 opened by levers 12A, 23 and links 16, 24. Should the ventilators stick, or fail to open, the rod 9 slides through a pivot pin 11 against the action of a spring 17, the tension of which is adjustable by a wing nut 18. A spring 19A, adjustable by a clip 20, counterbalances the weight of the ventilators. In a modification, two opposed pistons are provided in the tube 3 one of which is spring-pressed, and moves to accommodate the liquid should the other piston not respond to the pressure of the liquid.
