[Class 65 (i)] A door closing and checking apparatus, shown in a spring-operated form and in the open position, comprises a reciprocable member or piston 1 connected between the door 6 and the frame 7 by a pair of arms or levers 10, 15 which are connected together by a universal joint 14, one arm 15 being connected to the frame 7 (or the door) by a second universal joint 18, while the other arm 10 is connected to the reciprocal member and is pivoted at 19 on an axis perpendicular to the hinge axis of the door and fixed relatively to the door (or frame), the arrangement being such that in the open position the arms 10, 15 are substantially at right angles and are approximately in a plane perpendicular to the hinge axis of the door. In the form shown, the piston 1 works in a check cylinder 3 carried on the door, and is connected by a hollow piston-rod 2 and links 21 to the lever 10 near the pivot 19 of the lever ; the piston is pressed downwards by a compression spring 4, and has a passage 25 with a check valve allowing free downward movement of fluid, while upward movement of fluid is only allowed by a valve 28, adjustable from the top of the piston-rod, and apertures 30 in the wall of the latter. In the position shown, the door is held open by the thrust of the links 21 passing above the pivot 19 of the lever 10 ; in closing, the lever 10 rises to the vertical and continues into an approximately horizontal position, the mechanical advantage increasing owing to the increasing radius of action of the thrust of links 21, once this thrust has passed below the pivot 19, and, in the latter part of the movement, to the increasing inclination of the links 21 to the piston rod 2. The arm 15 rises during closing to an inclined position and then falls to the horizontal, the arms 10, 15 being approximately in the same vertical plane in the closed position. The arm 15 is screw-threaded to allow adjustment of its effective length.
