Abstract

400,646. Electric discharge tube signs. PULFORD, R., 23, Lynton Gardens, Colindeep Lane, Hendon, London. April 26, 1932, No. 12003. [Class 3 (ii).] An electric discharge tube sign comprises a sheet of glass or other transparent material provided with an interrupted surface groove on one side, a second sheet adjacent the grooved side of the first sheet and provided on the adjacent side with an interrupted surface groove which is the complement of the other groove, and an intermediate sheet, at least partially transparent, provided with apertures for the communication of the terminal points of the grooves so as to form a continuous chamber for the gas discharge. As shown, the sign comprises a glass sheet 21 provided with a groove 26 tracing the outline of the character but discontinued for those parts which if provided would intersect with other parts of the groove, a transparent sheet 22 provided with a groove 27 corresponding to the required outline between the terminal points 24, 25 of the groove 26 and a transparent sheet 23 provided with apertures 28 registering with the terminal points 24, 25 and the terminal points of the groove 27. The outer face of the sheet 22 may be formed with concavities or convexities and silvered. The gas chamber formed by the grooves may serve for edgewise illumination of characters formed either by painting on the surfaces of the sheets, by applying stencils thereto, or in one of the sheets by etching or sandblasting.
