Abstract

400,442. Cellulose tubes. CELLULOID CORPORATION, 290, Ferry Street, Newark, New Jersey, U.S.A. Dec. 7, 1932, No. 34717. Convention date, Dec. 7, 1931. [Class 99 (ii).] A tube of cellulose acetate or other cellulose derivative material is formed by first winding helically a strip 10 of the material about a mandrel 2 disposed within a tank 1 containing boiling water, then immersing the wound strip or coil, together with the mandrel, into cold water to cause it to set, then removing the coil and immersing it in a bath of acetone or other solvent where it is slightly untwisted to cause separation of its adjacent helical edges and facilitate application of the solvent thereto, and finally giving the coil a slight positive twist, removing it from the bath, and allowing it to dry. The strip is of substantially rectangular cross section, and it may be composed of two or more layers of material differing in composition and appearance. The invention is particularly applicable to the manufacture of fountain-pen barrels and caps.
