<PICT:0398478/IV/1> <PICT:0398478/IV/2> In a dry spinning-apparatus for the production of artificial filaments, ribbons, and like materials, and in particular of filaments of cellulose esters or ethers, there is provided, around the filter candle or other supply means immediately prior to the extrusion orifices, a readily removable attemperating member. Water or other fluid may be circulated through the attemperating member and preferably the construction is such that the attemperating member may be removed from about the filter candle without interrupting the flow. The attemperating member may be an annular jacket slidable upon the filter candle or it may be a coiled pipe surrounding the filter candle. The outer surface of the attemperating member is preferably lagged. As shown in Fig. 1, a spinning cell 4 is provided with a filter candle 5 carrying a spinning jet 6. The filter candle is surrounded by a jacket 7 supported by spring clips 8 bearing on the flange of the candle. Hot water from conduit 9 passes through a flexible tube 11 to the jacket 7 and leaves by a pipe 14 which conducts it to a conduit 16. A thermometer 17 is passed through a slot in the vessel 7 to a pocket in the filter candle 5. Baffles may be provided within the jacket in order to ensure efficient circulation of the hot water. As shown in Fig. 3, several spinning cells 4 are served by the supply and exhaust pipes 9, 16. The temperature of the fluid supplied to the different vessels 7 is maintained equal by providing a rapid flow of hot water through the system, the conduits 9, 16 being of large bore so that the temperature drop along their length is small.
