Abstract
396,377. Flexible-unjointed hinges. ADAMS, W. L., Gamlingay, Cambridgeshire. Dec. 31, 1931, Nos. 36042/31 and 26894/32. [Class 65 (ii).] In a pivot of the type having a cushion of rubber or similar material between, and directly engaging, the pin and the socket, to allow universal relative movement of the parts against the resistance of the rubber, which tends to return the parts to their normal position, the pivot pin is provided with two or more lateral pins or studs engaging recesses in the rubber cushion. The space between the ends of the pins and the socket is made as small as possible in order to minimize deflection under load, and the rubber is preferably positively prevented from rotation in the socket. The cushion is formed of hard rubber, to resist oscillation, and is provided with recesses to give the necessary resilience. In the form shown, the socket is formed of two parts 1, 2, bolted together, and the rubber cushion is likewise formed in two parts 12 ; the pivot pin 6 is provided with two radial pins 7 entering corresponding recesses in the rubber parts 12. The rubber parts 12 are prevented from moving in the socket by pins 13 on the socket parts engaging corresponding recesses in the rubber members and by plates 14 clamped between the socket parts 1, 2 and projecting between the two rubber members. The rubber members 12 are formed with recesses 17 to increase their resilience. The rubber members are arranged to overlap the edges of the socket members, and are clamped thereon by end plates 19 on the pivot pin.
