[Class 60.] A machine for scouring boot and shoe parts, particularly the heel portion of a sole S, Fig. 4, which is to be subsequently split to form the breast flap of a Louis heel, comprises an abrading band 15 driven at high speed and operating, through a slot in the table 21, on the work which is fed slowly across the slot under the influence of a feed-controlling roll 37. The abrading strip passes over a rubber &c. covered roller 5 mounted on a shaft 3 driven bv a belt 9, and a tensioning roller 17 whose shaft 19 is mounted in a sleeve 20 pivoted on a spindle 22 which is itself pivoted on a spindle parallel to the shaft 19, an eccentric lever 129 being employed to set the shaft 19 parallel to the shaft 3 while tension is applied by a spring 32. The feed-controlling roll 37 is carried by an arm 35 pivoted at 33 and having an extension 43 yieldingly coupled by a sleeve 45 and spring 55 to a treadle rod 47 actuated by a treadle 49. An adjustable stop 58 limits the approach of the feed roll to the work table. The feed roll is offset slightly from the vertical plane through the axis of the shaft 3. The work table 21 is pivoted at 28 and angularly adjusted by a screw 27 to vary the projection of the band 15 through the slot in the work table, the width of the slot being adjustable by bevelled plates 25 provided with elongated holes and secured in a recess in the work table by screws 26. The scourings removed from the ' work are discharged through the hollow column 1 by means of a fan 83. The extent of the portion of work to be operated on is predetermined by an adjustable stop 91 and the machine may operate either by feeding the work outwards from the stop, or by feeding it to the stop.
