This invention relates to skiving `machines and is herein illustrated as embodied in a leather skiving machine having a cylindrical knife.
Toe stifeners are commonly skived along their rear curved edges; and, in order to facilitate this and similar skiving operations and to get the greatest production from the machine, it is desirable that each toe stiifener, after it has beenpresented properly to the machine, should be automatically swung so that no guiding by the operator is required. Torthis end there is provided in a skiving the invention, a combined pressing and feeding roll for engaging van edgeV of the work, such as the rear edge of a toe stiifener, and a stationary member for engaging the work at lustrative machine the work is engaged at an edge and fed through the machine by a worksupporting and feeding roll and a cooperating pressing and feeding roll which holds roll and aids in the feed movement, a stationary presser foot being provided which engages the work at a locality spaced from the edge thereof and exerts a drag upon the work at that locality to cause the work to vbe swung so that the cut of the knife follows the curve of the edge.
In order to facilitate the swinging of the work the illustrated presser roll, according to another feature of the invention, comprises a driven section which engages an edge of the work and an idle section which engages the work at a locality spaced from said edge. In the illustrated construction, this idle section is located between the driven section andthe 4stationary presser foot or drag meniber referred to above and thus facilitates the swinging of the work.
These and other features of the invention,
including certain detailsof construction and combinations of parts will be described as embodied in an illustrative machine and pointed out in the appended claims.

In its general construction the machine is or may be similar to the machine of Patent No. 1,469,849 referred to above, and before proceeding to describe the new parts lin detail, a general description of the old construction will be given. The machine of the present application, like that ofthe patent,
fed to the knife by a work-supporting and feeding roll 9 and a cooperating sectional presser roll comprising a driven section 11 and an idle section 13. The sectional presser roll is part of the new construction and will be described in detail below. The knife is fast to oneV end of a horizontal shaft which may be rotated from any suitable source of power. The work-supporting and feeding roll is yieldingly supported in such manner that it may both yield downwardly away from the adjacent edge of the knife and tilt about an axis which is at right angles to its axis of rotation, said roll being driven continuously from the knife shaft. An edge gage 15 is provided for engaging the edge of the work, this edge gage being somewhat different from that of the patented machine; but the details of its construction -form no part of the presentinvention, and any suitable edge gage may be employed. The presser-roll shaft 17 is rotatably mounted in a carrier 19 which is somewhat different from that of the patented machine in that itis'in the form of a yoke, one leg of which is provided with a bearing forthe outer end of the shaft 17. This carrier is mounted for angular adjustment by being provided with a curved rib which fits in a curved guidevvay 21 formed in the lower portion of a bar 23, the upper end of which is vertically adjustable in a vertical guideway formed in a member 25 carried by an overhanging arm of the frame of the machine. The carrier 19 is provided with a curved slot 27 through which extends a pin 29 carried by the bar 23 and having threaded upon its outer end a lock nut 31. The machine, as thus far described, with the exceptions noted above, is or may be similar to the patented machine; and reference is made to the patent for details of construction. It will be understood, however, that the work is seized by the work-supporting and presser rolls and advanced to the knife.
The present machine is particularly adapted for the skiving of comparatively heavy pieces of work such as toe stieners, one of which is indicated by broken lines at 100 in Fig. l. These stiffeners are commonly skived along their convexly curved rear edges, and must, therefore, be swung through a considerable angle during the skiving operation. In order to produce a suitable swinging movement, the presser roll of the machine comprises two sections, the driven section 11 which is threaded onand fast to the shaft 17, and the idle section 13 which is freely revolvable upon the shaft. This shaft is revolvably mounted in alined bearings 36, 37 held respectively by spaced depending portions of the carrier 19, the shaft being driven continuously as in the patented machine by a small driving shaft 39 which is connected to it by a universal joint.
The presser roll has a periphery which is concavely curved longitudinally to correspond to the longitudinal convex curvature of the work-supporting and feeding roll 9; and the edge gage is adjusted into a position such that the edge of the work passes between the roll 9 and the driven section 11 of the presser roll, which has its largest diameter at its left-hand end, while the idle section 13 engages the work at a locality spaced from the edge of the work. Because of the concavely conical shape of the driven section 11, the edge of the work tends to travel faster than the body portion and this tendency is permitted to be effective and somewhat aided by the idle section 13. In order, however, to increase this tendency, there is provided a presser foot in the form of a spring steel member 41 adjustably fastened to the carrier 19 by screws 43 which pass through a slot in the member. This presser foot 41 has a depending curved portion which extends beneath the carrier 19 into a position in which it engages the upper surface of the work; and, in order to take the thrust of thisl stationary presser foot, a work-supporting plate 45, fastened by a screw 47 to the base of the machine, extends over the outer end of the roll 9 into a position below the presser foot 41.
In the operation of the machine, a piece of work, such as a toe stiifener, having a curved edge along which a scarf is to be iliade is presented to the rolls with the curved edge against the edge gage 15 and the leading end of this edge presented between the work-supporting and feeding roll 9 and the driven section 11 of the presser roll. As the work passes through the machine, the idle section 13 engages the work at a locality spaced somewhat from the yedge thereof, and the presser foot 41 engages the work at a locality spaced still farther from its edge. The idle section 13 tends somewhat to cause the Work to be swung, but its principal function is to permit such swinging. The stationary presser foot 41 presses the work against the support 45, thereby exerting a positive drag up on the work at a locality spaced considerably from the edge thereof so that the work is compelled to swing properly as it is being skived.
Although the invention has been set forth as embodied in a particular machine, it should be understood that the invention is not limited in the scope of its application to the particular machine which has been shown and described.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Fatent of the United lStates is:
1. A machine of the class described having, in combination, a skiving knife, and means for engaging a piece of work and feeding it to the knife, said means comprising a combined pressing and feeding roll for engaging an edge of the work, and said roll being tapered concavely from one end to the other, and a stationary member located near the smaller end of the roll for engaging the work at a locality spaced from the edge of the work.
2. A machine of the class described having, in combination, a skiving knife, a onepiece feed roll, and a pressure cooperating with the feed roll, said presser comprising a sectional roll of greater diameter at one end than at the other having a driven section and a section which is freely revolvable with respect to said driven section.
3. A machine of the class described having, in combination, a skiving knife, a onepiece feed roll, and a presser cooperating with the feed roll, said presser comprising a sectional roll having aI driven section and a section freely revolvable with respect to said driven section, and a stationary member located adjacent to the freely revolvable section adapted to exert a drag upon the moving work.
4. A machine of the class described having, in combination, a cylindrical skiving knife, a one-piece work-supporting and feeding roll, a cooperating presser roll, and a shaft upon which the presser roll is mounted, said presser roll being tapered concavely from one end to the other and comprising a section fast to said shaft for engaging an edge of the work, and a section freely revolvable on said shaft for engaging the work in a locality spaced from said edge.
5. A machine of the class described having, in combination, a cylindrical skiving knife, a work-supporting and feeding roll, a cooperating presser roll, a shaft upon which the presser roll is mounted, said presser roll comprising a section fast to said shaft for engaging an edge of the work, and a section freely revolvable on said shaft for engaging the work in a locality spaced from said edge, and a presser foot for engaging the work at a locality spaced farther from the edge of the work than is the locality engaged by the freely revolvable section.
6. A machine of the class described having, in combination, a cylindrical skiving knife, a feed roll extending into the knife, a cooperating presser roll located above the feed roll, a shaft to which the presser roll is fast, an angularly adjustable carrier in which the presser roll shaft is rotatably mounted, a roll concentric with the presser roll and loosely mounted on the presser-roll shaft, and a yielding presser foot mounted on the carrier.
7 A machine of the class described having, in combination, a cylindrical skiving knife, a feed roll extending into the knife, a cooperating presser roll located above the feed roll, a shaft to which the presser roll is fast, an angularly adjustable carrier in which the presser-roll shaft is rotatably mounted, a roll concentric with the presser roll and loosely mounted on the presser-roll shaft, and a. yielding presser foot adjustably mounted on the carrier.
8. A machine of the class described having, in combination, a cylindrical skiving knife, a feed roll located partly within the knife for supporting and feeding a piece of work to the knife, a cooperating presser roll located above the feed roll for pressing the work against the supporting roll and for aiding in the feeding of the work and an edge gage for directing the margin of the work between the rolls, said presser roll comprising a driven section located to engage an edge of the Work, and a concentric idle section located to engage the blank at a locality spaced from the edge thereof.
9. A machine of the class described having, in combination, a cylindrical skiving knife, a feed roll located partly within the knife for supporting and feeding a piece of work to the knife, a cooperating presser roll located above the feed roll for pressing the work against the supporting roll and for aiding in the feeding of the work, an edge gage for directing the margin of the'work between the roll, said presser roll comprising a driven section located to engage the edge of the work, and a, concentric idle section located to engagethe blank at a locality spaced from the edge thereof, and a stationary member located adjacent to the idle Section and remote from the driven section for exerting a drag on the work.
