Abstract

392,882. Indicating liquid levels. ELECTRICAL IMPROVEMENTS, Ltd., Carliol House, Newcastle-on-Tyne, and BLACKBURN, C. L., 2, Ryder Street, London. Dec. 18, 1931, No. 6402/33. [Class 123 (i).] In a liquid-level indicator of the transparent gauge type, differently coloured beams of light are directed on to the gauge at such an angle to one another that from a chosen observing point the gauge will appear as of one colour above the liquid-level, and of the other colour below the liquid-level. The indications of the gauge may be reproduced at a convenient position on the firing floor by the optical arrangement described in Specification 387,752. In Figs. 8 and 9, two colour screens H4, H5, respectively red and green, are arranged between a condensing mirror H<2> and the gauge G. A source of light H<1>, and a reflector H<3> provide the illumination, and the red rays K<2> are deflected on to the gauge by a prism H<6>, the green rays K<1> going straight to the gauge. The green rays' emerge as divergent beams K<3>, K<4>, one of which passes to the projecting apparatus J, and the red rays also emerge as divergent beams K<5>, K<6>. The beams K<3>, K<6> are caused by the projecting apparatus to show the water level as the dividing line between red and green parts of the image of the gauge, Figs. 8 and 9 showing the path of the rays below and above the water level, respectively. The gauge may be viewed directly without a projection apparatus by locating a vertical light strip N behind a diffusing screen, and two colour screens O, O<1> with a cylindrical lens P close to the gauge G, the colour screens being in the focal plane of the lens. To an observer walking past the gauge, it appears in turn green above the water level, and dark below, then dark above the water level and red below. In a modification, differently coloured glow discharge tubes may be used. A gauge glass of the kind described in Specifications 263,638, [Class 123 (i), Liquidlevel regulating &c.], or 392,642 may be employed.
