Abstract
392,827. Pipe &c. couplings. MONTGOMERY, G. A., P.O. Box 5293, Young Street, Dallas, Texas, U.S.A. Oct. 26, 1932, No. 29995. [Class 99 (i).] In a coupling for drill stems &c., the pipe sections are formed with acutelytapered coarsely-threaded pins 7 adapted to engage with correspondingly threaded boxes 14, 15 on a coupling sleeve 2 which is formed with an internal flange 16 engaged by the end 8 of the pin, with or without the interposition of rings 18, to make fluidtight joints in advance of the threads 6, 11 of the pins 7 and boxes 14, 15. The end of the pipe section is thickened and its bore reduced until, near the end of the pipe, it is formed with parallel walls 5 terminating in a face 8 substantially thicker than the normal thickness of the pipe. The boxes of the ring 18 and flange 16 are equal to that of the walls 5, and the ring, which is of harder material than the pipe section, prevents the pin from being screwed in far enough to expand the box and compress the pins beyond their elastic limits, and also prevents creeping of the threads when the sleeve is heated in the well bore, thereby assuring a precise length of drill stem. The edges of the flange 16 are bevelled at 20 for the insertion of a tool to free the ring 18. The tips of the threads 6 are cut away leaving a passage for lubricant, escape of which is prevented by an outstanding packing-ring 9 in the pin engaging a tapering counterbore 21 in the box, the arrangement also counteracting side play between the pin and the box.
