Abstract

392,804. Variable-speed gearing. SODERQVIST, W. O. N., 42, Malargatan, Lidk÷ping, Sweden. Sept. 26, 1932, No. 26712. Convention date, Sept. 24, 1931. [Classes 80 (ii) and 80 (iii).] A shaft 2, Fig. 1, is driven alternately by two one-way mounted pinions 16 which engage two toothed segments 12 which are rocked about a driving-shaft 1 by variable-throw cranks 15 in opposite phase. Crank blocks 11 are guided to slide radially on the faces of loose gears 5 driven constantly from pinions 4 fast on the shaft 1. A recess in each block 11 is engaged by a pin 15 protruding from a block 14 which slides, as the gear 5 rotates, in a slot 13 in each segment 12. Each crank block 11 is connected to a central plunger 23 by a bell crank 53 pivoted at 58 to the gear 5. The plungers 23 are operated together towards and from one another to vary the amplitude of oscillation of the alternately-acting segments 12 and thereby to vary the speed of the one-way driven shaft 2. The plungers 23 are for this purpose connected to two racks 56 which engage on opposite sides a pinion 54 which is turned by a control handle 55. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also an arrangement with a single variable-throw crank 15, Fig. 1 (Cancelled), and segment 12. A gear train 19, 21 is arranged to give on the back stroke of the segment 12 an additional equal impulse to the shaft 2. The crank block 11 is slid inwards and outwards in a guide 10 upon the gear 5 by the effort of the engine. The block 11 is formed on its rear face with a scroll engaging a scroll on the face of a gear 8 fast on a shaft 7 on which the hollow gear 5 turns being driven from a pinion 4 fast on the shaft 1. The shaft 7 carries a cone 28 and a gear 32, the latter meshing with a gear 33 loose on the shaft 1 and larger than the gear 4. The scroll gear 8 is arrested to move the block 11 inwards by bringing a brake cone 29 into engagement momentarily with the cone 28. The scroll gear 8 is accelerated relatively to the gear 5 to move the block 11 outwards by moving a cone clutch 35 splined on the shaft 1 into engagement with a cone 34 on the hub of the loose gear 33. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
