Abstract

392,294. Valve mechanism. SHORT, A., Mill Court, Ashford Road, Bearsted, near Maidstone, SHORT, F. S., King's Head Hotel, Rochester, (Representatives of Short, A. E.), and SHORT, H. O., Seaplane Works, Rochester, both in Kent. Feb. 9, 1932, No. 3833. [Class 7 (vi).] In means for loading tappet-operated valves by fluid pressure, the valve stem 10 is connected to an annular piston 17 sliding between concentric cylinders 14, 15, to the space 16 between which compressed air is supplied from a reservoir past a non-return valve 31 and a regulating - valve 30. If a constant loading pressure is required to be maintained, the non-return valve is replaced by an expansion chamber the volume of which is large in comparison with that of the space 16. In aircraft, the regulating-valve is under the control of the pilot. The several valves of the engine may be arranged in series along the air-pressure conduit 28. The piston 17 is formed with wings or extensions 22 sliding through slots formed in the cover 20 of the outer cylinder 15, these extensions being screwed to a plug 23 and to a cap 24 engaging a slotted cotter 25 provided in a grooved portion of the valve stem. Specification 129,729, [Class 7 (vi), Internal-combustion engines, Valves &c. for], is referred to.
