Abstract

In obtaining sodium hydroxide by the action of ferric oxide on sodium nitrate at elevated temperature and the subsequent decomposition of the sodium ferrite so formed by means of water, amorphous silicic acid is included in the reaction mixture for carrying out the first step of the process. Alternatively, natural limonite may be employed as a material containing both ferric oxide and amorphous silica. The first step of the process may be carried out at 600-750 DEG C. preferably under reduced pressure in an inclined revolving furnace, a furnace provided with a screw-conveyer, or a shaft furnace to which the material is supplied in a granular form. Air or other gases such as combustion gases may be supplied to the furnace and either the gases or the reaction mixture may contain water vapour or water. The air &c. may flow either in cocurrent with or in countercurrent to the reaction mixture. The decomposition of the sodium ferrite by water may be effected at temperatures above 100 DEG C. under pressure.
