Abstract

Spent caustic alkali solution from a petroleum refining process is deodorized for discharge into a liquid environment, e.g. the sea, by reducing the pH to below 8,5, preferably to 7,5-8,5, by the addition of aqueous acid, e.g. 60-98 per cent. sulphuric acid, and thereafter stripping with carbon dioxide-containing gas, preferably at a temperature of 100-200 DEG F. The pH is preferably not reduced to below that of the liquid environment. When this is sea water the pH is preferably adjusted to approximately 8. The carbon dioxide-containing gas may be flue gas, and is preferable used in admixture with steam. The stripping may be a batch process or a continuous process with countercurrent flow. After stripping the spent caustic alkali solution in the continuous process, the carbon dioxide-containing gas may be used to strip hydrogen sulphide-containing water in similar manner.
