Abstract

<PICT:0390870/III/1> In the formation of nitrogen, or a mixture containing up to ten per cent. of hydrogen, by the thermal decomposition of ammonia, with or without a catalyst, and the combustion with air of the gaseous mixture, the heat of combustion is utilized for the decomposition, e.g. by heat exchange, auxiliary heating being thereby avoided. When a catalyst is employed, this may be contained in an annular space surrounding the combustion chamber. As shown, the combustion and heat exchanging chambers consist of superposed cylinders 2, 1, the combustion chamber being lined with refractory material 15. Housed in the cylinder 1 is a coiled iron pipe 9, the coil being formed with a taper and closed at the top by a plate 16 so that the combustion gases are caused to escape between the coils. Ammonia is fed to the coil by a pipe 8 and the decomposition products are led by a pipe 11 to the base of the cylinder 1, air being supplied by apertures 13 in the cover 12 and controlled by a rotary perforated plate 14. The products of combustion leave by a central aperture 6 and a pipe 7. In operation, the initial temperature is obtained by burning hydrogen or coal gas, or ammonia and oxygen, in the combustion chamber, or an electric heater may be employed. Presence of free oxygen in the gases is avoided by controlling the air supply, a decrease in which results in a small amount of hydrogen in the resultant gas; free ammonia in the gases is also avoided by controlling the air supply.
