Abstract

390,615. Motor driving arrangements. SPENCER, MOULTON, & CO., Ltd., G. and GLASCODINE, R. T., 2, Central Buildings, Westminster. Feb. 26, 1932, No. 5817. [Class 35.] A motor suspension for electrically propelled rail vehicles comprises a rigid casing swung at one end on the driving axle with a spring or springs at the opposite end taking the static load and an additional spring or springs at such end unaffected by the load but operative to resist movements of the casing due to torque &c. impulses produced when running. The nosepiece 9 of the motor casing 6, swung on the driving axle 1, engages a bearer plate 13 with a bridge-piece 15 guided between the walls 18, 19 of a bracket casting 11 bolted to a machined facing on a cross member 12 of the vehicle frame. The static weight is taken by a spring 26 seated in a central pocket 24, additional springs 31, 32, 35, 36, connected to the plate 13 by bolts 39, 40 and located in adjacent pockets with horizontal partitions 27, 28, being brought into operation by movements of the casing due to torque reactions &c. A rod 41 threaded into the plate 13 to locate the spring 26 is provided with a squared head to facilitate removal. The springs may be as shown, of rubber in cylindrical form with uniformly spaced metal plates embedded in the material, or they may each consist of a series of rings of rubber moulded about metal plates with metal plates interposed between the rings. The nosepiece 9 may be laterally cushioned by rubber cheekplates 44, 45 or it may be frictionally held by a spring-pressed plunger 52, Fig. 4, the head 50 of which may be faced with suitable material. The spring 56 acting on the plunger is encased by a cover 57 and a nut 58 retains the plunger in position if the nosepiece is withdrawn. Instead of independent additional springs for cushioning the upward and downward driving thrusts, dual functioning supplementary springs acting to cushion thrusts in either direction may be provided in association with the load-carrying spring 26. The springs in each case are arranged to provide suitably greater resistance to movements in the downward direction in which the static load and driving reactions act conjointly.
