Abstract
389,588. Auxiliary air admission. SHORT, G., 21, Espagnol Flats, Sir Thomas Mitchell's Road, Bondi , near Sydney, Australia. Dec. 17, 1931, No. 34990. Convention date, Dec. 18, 1930. [Class 7 (ii).] In road-vehicle engines means for destroying the vacuum in the induction passage 29 during periods of over-running with the throttle valve closed comprise an electrically-operated valve, in a casing 1, which is opened to admit air through a passage 22, when an electric circuit is completed through terminals 18 by closure (a) of a switch 33, 34 by release of the accelerator pedal 32, and (b) of a cut-out switch 9, which occurs when the dynamo 19, driven by the engine, is delivering a predetermined voltage ; the provision (b) prevents stalling of the engine. The valve, in the casing 1 may comprise an armature 5, Fig. 1, which is attracted by a polepiece 4 against an adjustable spring 6, a lip 23 ensuring quick opening or closing. In a modification, Fig. 5, the valve 5 is lifted against gravity and a double-seated intermediate member 42 of non-magnetic material, ensures quick opening of the valve ; the member 42 may, however, be omitted.
