[Class 103 (v).] Buffing and draw gear for railway vehicles comprises the combination of outside buffers with central buffing and draw gear having a plurality of springs 16, 17, 18 operative in series on buff to give movement consonant with that of the outside buffers, and in parallel on draw. The coupler shank 1 shown equipped with an M.C.B. coupler 12 is pivoted at 14 to a draw-rod 15 supporting the springs which on draw are compressed equally by nuts 33, 34, 35 on the draw-rod 15 acting on plates 20, 22, 24, corresponding plates 19, 21, 23 abutting fixed projections 29, 30, 31 integral with draw sills 25, 26 which are carried by reinforcing castings 27, 28 riveted to the centre sills 3, 4 and extending between the end sill 2 and bogie-carrying transom 5. In buffing the thrust is transmitted gradually through each spring to the plate 24 and stops 32. The stem 7 of each of the outside buffers passes through a buffer case 8 and the end sill 2 to operate under normal impacts an indiarubber spring 9 while under more intensive impacts the head 6 engages a sleeve 10 acting on a high capacity spring 11. In a modification the outside buffers are single-acting, the auxiliary draw sills are riveted directly to the centre sills, and the load on buff is distributed by the rods fixed to the end sill 2, some of the rods being adjustably secured to the transom and some extending to the other end sill of the vehicle. Helical steel springs or friction gear may replace or supplement the indiarubber springs and the central gear may be embraced by a yoke. During the conversion of the stock to automatic couplers the coupler shank 1 may be replaced by a hook mounted on the pin 14 or by a shank, hook, and arm carrying an automatic coupler.
