Abstract

A water-insoluble fusible synthetic resin (other than an alkyd resin) is made into a stable aqueous suspension, e.g. by treatment in a colloid mill, if necessary with the addition of a protective colloid such as gum arabic. The suspension is mixed with fibrous or other fillers or with an aqueous suspension of such fillers, or is applied to paper, fabric, &c., and the water is removed from the mixture. Preferably a precipitant such as ferric chloride, alum, sodium phosphate, or gas black is added to facilitate the separation of the water. The product when loose fillers are used may be either sheeted or dried for use as a pressure moulding composition: when sheets of paper, fabrics, &c. are treated they may be superposed and consolidated into laminated sheets, tubes, &c.
