Abstract

Crude coke oven gas is freed from its content of nitrogen oxides by passage at high temperatures and normal or increased pressure over catalysts consisting of sulphides of metals of the sixth group of the periodic system. The nitrogen oxides are thereby converted into ammonia. The sulphides of tungsten and molybdenum are particularly referred to and they may be employed alone or applied to supports such as pumice, asbestos or ceramic materials. Temperatures of 150-230 DEG C. may be employed. According to examples catalysts are prepared, (1) by impregnating ceramic material with ammonium sulpho-molybdate solution, drying and treating the product with hydrogen at 210 DEG C. or (2) by impregnating pumice with ammonium molybdate solution and treating the product with hydrogen sulphide at 210 DEG C.
